Review – SKG Wide Chute Masticating Juicer

The SKG New Generation Wide Chute Masticating Juicer is a relative newcomer on the juicing market, however it has quickly established itself as a popular model and is in the top 10 best sellers on Amazon at the time of writing.   It is similar to the Kuvings slow juicer model but is considerably less expensive and also has a handy featured carrying handle built in, good news as this is one solid juicer weighing in at 23lb!

A Kuvings look-alike that is cheaper and has a 5 yr Warranty on parts and 10 yrs on the motor

Sporting a sleek red finish this is one good looking juicerAccording to SKG all parts (the stainless steel, the silicone components and the juicing screw) are made of high quality TRITAN food grade anti-oxidative materials. The product is certified by FDA, UL, ETL, GS, CE, and ROHS. The machine features an extremely hard Auger, similar to the Ultem material found on other more expensive juicers such as the Omega range of masticating juicers.  We would expect a long life from the Auger and the mesh screen enclosure is also made from the same material.

The SKG New Generation Wide Chute Masticating Juicer features a powerful 240W motor turning at the common 60 RPM that seems to be the chosen speed for many masticating juicers, producing a low oxidised juice with minimum froth.   The SKG juicer will crush a large variety of produce, and the 3” feed chute makes juicing a fast process, although you will have to chop fibrous vegetables such as celery or spinach into smaller sized pieces. This is necessary as the pulp outlet has a sharp bend that is prone to clogging with fibrous material.  SKG also advise that ginger should be cut thinly across the tough fibres.

√ TIP – We recommend using as little pressure as possible when using the pusher. This allows the machine to operate efficiently and avoids clogging and wasting time – just relax and enjoy your juicing!
SKG also point out that very soft ingredients such as e.g., bananas, Kiwi fruits, mangos etc. are difficult to be squeezed. This is common with most other vertical masticating machines and is not specific to the SKG machine.

Two strainers are included with the machine, one for juicing and the other for making purees.  The machine also features a juice tap which prevents any drips.  Also included with the juicer as standard are a tofu strainer, which for tofu fans is a handy way to make a batch of tofu easily.  Sadly there is no strainer cleaning tool like the one that features in the Kuvings machine, but you can clean the mesh strainer easily by hand with the provided brush, preferably as soon as possible after juicing.

As with most vertical masticating juicers it’s best to juice your produce in a sequence – hard produce like carrots followed by fruit such as apples, then something hard again. Doing this keeps the mesh working at optimum as the hard produce forces the softer ingredients through the mesh.  Finishing with some hard ingredients also makes the mesh screen easier to clean up.

Juice Quality and Yield

The SKG New Generation Wide Chute Masticating Juicer is a good performer as one would expect from a slow 60 RPM machine, with minimal amounts of pulp in the juice. Heating of the juice is insignificant with this model and very little frothing of the juice occurs, resulting in a high quality end product.  Juice can be stored in the refrigerator for 24-36 Hrs, provided the juice is placed in a tightly sealed container such as a Mason jar, ideally filled to the top to minimise any oxidation.  This juicer is up there with the best centrifugal models we have seen as far as yield in concerned. This may very well be the best juicer to buy if you’re in the market for a low footprint juicer that is faster to use than a horizontal slow juicer.

Noise

The SKG New Generation Wide Chute Masticating Juicer is a slow and quiet machine which is a pleasure to use, especially if you hate the whine of blenders and other high speed kitchens appliances.   Normal conversation is possible during operation of the juicer.

Cleaning

The clean up is pretty easy, with the longest time being spent on the filter. Use the brush that is included to clean the mesh screen, which is the most important part that needs to be kept completely clean for best performance.  As always we advise cleaning immediately after juicing to prevent any pulp particles adhering to the screen.  If you must delay cleaning by a few minutes it is better to put the mesh screen into a container of hot soapy water to keep the residue moist.   The rest of the parts are super easy to wash, it comes apart easily and it is a simple operation to re-assemble the juicer.

√ TIP -To minimize cleaning time, line the pulp container with a produce bag to collect the pulp. Pulp can then be used for other dishes, or as compost for gardens or discard in your normal waste or bio waste bin.

Warranty

Warranty may vary on this juicer depending on where you buy it.  As an example, SKG have an agreement in place with Amazon that gives customers a 5-Year Warranty (2 Years SKG Warranty + 3 Years Amazon Special Warranty) for all parts, and an extended 10-Year Warranty for the motor and main body.  This is an excellent set up as Amazon customer service on faulty equipment is very good.

First look at the SKG New Generation Juicer

    Our Verdict

The SKG New Generation Wide Chute Masticating Juicer is an affordable alternative to several of the other vertical masticating machines that are significantly more expensive.  It has a generous feed chute that cuts down on preparation time, although some produce will still require cutting into smaller pieces. It handles hard fruit and vegetables well, but if your main interest is leafy vegetables then a horizontal slow juicer may be your best choice. The warranty is good (may vary with different suppliers) considering this is a relatively new venture from a Chinese manufacturer.

Overall the SKG New Generation Wide Chute Masticating Juicer is worth considering if your budget won’t quite stretch to the other more widely known makes such as Omega or Tribest.  If speed is your main requirement then take a look at our reviews of popular centrifugal juicers.

After reading your review and researching the review comments on Amazon’s site I decided to buy the SKG, and I love it. This is the second juicer we have owned and this machine beats our old centrifugal machine hands dow. I can actually talk to the rest of the family now when juicing and they can hear me too!
